Population Fluctuation of the Black Olive Scale, Saissetia oleae (Olivier) Infesting the Ornamental Plant, Nerium oleander under Assiut Governorate Conditions

Abstract

The ornamental plant, Nerium oleander was studied for its role as a host for the black olive scale, Saissetia oleae (Olivier). The present study was conducted at the Agriculture Experiment Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University during two consecutive seasons 2021/2022 and 2022/2023. The results of both seasons indicated that the highest weekly pest numbers were recorded during the first week of September. The highest percentages of total monthly average numbers (out of total annual numbers) were found during August (23.59%) and September (27.17%) of the first and second years. The pest has five field annual generations. The climatic conditions of April were ideal for insect reproduction and accumulation as the highest monthly variation rate (MVR) value was achieved during both seasons. No parasitic species were recorded during both seasons. The effect of weather conditions on pest populations was also investigated.

أجريت الدراسة الحقلية الحالية على أحد نباتات الزينة (الدفلة) كعائل لحشرة الزيتون القشرية السوداء وذلك بمحطة التجارب الزراعية بكلية الزراعة جامعة أسيوط خلال موسمين زراعيين متتاليين 2021/2022، 2022/2023. وقد أظهرت النتائج أن أعلى تعداد أسبوعي لهذه الافة قد تم تسجيله خلال الأسبوع الأول من شهر سبتمبر. وكان أعلى نسبة لمتوسط أجمالي التعداد الشهري لمجموع الحشرات منسوبا لأجمالي التعداد السنوي قد سجل في شهري أغسطس (23.59%) وسبتمبر (27.17%) لكلا العامين الأول والثاني، على التوالي. كما تم تسجيل عدد خمسة اجيال لهذه الافة سنوياَ في منطقة الدراسة المشار اليها بعالية. ومن ناحية اخرى فقد اظهرت النتائج ان شهر ابريل كان أكثر الاشهر ملاءمة لتميزه بالظروف المناخية المثالية اللازمة لنمو.
